FAO Members celebrate 10th anniversary of landmark fisheries treaty

Success of Agreement on Port State Measures to eliminate illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing hailed as countries gather for COFI discussion on global fisheries and aquaculture challenges

The treaty, brokered into being by FAO, has 86 parties, representing 110 FAO Members, and is designed to prevent vessels engaged in IUU activity from using ports and landing their catch.

Almost three quarters of coastal states are now bound by the PSMA. Moldova was welcomed on Monday as the latest countries to submit their instruments of accession.

The Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) is the first binding international agreement to specifically target illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Its objective is to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing by preventing vessels engaged in IUU fishing from using ports and landing their catches. In this way, the PSMA reduces the incentive of such vessels to continue to operate while it also blocks fishery products derived from IUU fishing from reaching national and international markets. 

India is not a Party to Convention.

ISRO developing semi-cryogenic engine working on LOX Kerosene propellant

ISRO is developing a 2000 kN thrust semi-cryogenic engine working on an LOX Kerosene propellant combination for enhancing the payload capability of LVM3 and for future launch vehicles. Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) is the lead centre for the development of semi-cryogenic propulsion systems with the support of other launch vehicle centres of ISRO. The assembly and testing of the propulsion modules were done at the ISRO propulsion complex (IPRC), Mahendragiri. As part of the engine development, a pre-burner ignition test article, which is a full complement of the engine power head system excluding the turbopumps is realized. The first ignition trial was conducted successfully on May 2, 2024, at semi cryo integrated engine test facility (SIET) at IPRC, Mahendragiri, which was dedicated to the nation recently by the honorable Prime Minister of India.
