World Bank approves two projects in India to improve the quality of education in Punjab & boost incomes for small and marginal farmers in Maharashtra

 The World Bank Board of Executive Directors approved following two projects in India:

  1. The Punjab Outcomes-Acceleration in School Education Operation (POISE) program 
  2. The Maharashtra Project on Climate Resilient Agriculture (POCRA) Phase II
The Punjab Outcomes-Acceleration in School Education Operation (POISE) program: 

Program aims to improve quality education in Punjab with the aid of technology to track learning outcomes.
  1. Primary and Secondary Schools: It will ensure 1.3 million students are enrolled in primary schools, and more than 2.2 million students are enrolled in secondary schools.
  2. Early Childwood Education: In addition, 592,000 students will be supported in early childhood education. 
  3. Digital Infrastructure: POISE will support digital infrastructure in schools by setting up computer labs, tablets and projectors to foster innovation, especially for students enrolled in science and math curriculum. 
  4. Term of Project: The POISE project has a final maturity of 19 years including a grace period of five years.

The Maharashtra Project on Climate Resilient Agriculture (POCRA) Phase II:
  1. The Maharashtra Project on Climate Resilient Agriculture Phase- II commonly known as Nanaji Deshmukh Krishi Sanjeevani Prakalp Phase II aims at fostering climate-resilient agricultural practices to address the challenges posed by climate variability and socio-economic vulnerabilities in the agricultural sector.
  2. PoCRA-II aims to position agriculture as a profitable occupation for smallholders’ farmers while reducing the adverse impacts of variable environmental factors on agriculture across select districts of Maharashtra.
  3. The proposed project design will be structured around four interlinked components: A. Resource-Efficient Productivity Enhancement. B. Promoting Precision Agriculture for GHG Emissions Management. C. Improving and Building Income Resilience; and, D. Project Management and Institutional Strengthening.
  4. Term of Project: The POCRA Phase II project has a final maturity of 24 years, including a grace period of 6 years.
