Hurricane Erin

Hurricane Erin is an active tropical cyclone currently passing northeast of the Bahamas. The fifth named storm, first hurricane and first major hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, Erin developed from a tropical wave on August 11, while passing westward over Cape Verde. Afterwards, Erin stayed at tropical storm status due to marginally favorable conditions as it crossed the central Atlantic the next few days. By the time it neared the Lesser Antilles, it had strengthened into a hurricane on August 15. Very favorable conditions enabled Erin to undergo explosive intensification on August 16, reaching its peak at Category 5 intensity with one-minute maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (260 km/h) and a minimum pressure of 915 mb (27.0 inHg). An eyewall replacement cycle occurred later that day, and as a result, Erin weakened to Category 3 intensity and began growing in size. After the completion of the eyewall replacement cycle, the hurricane reintensified into a Category 4 hurricane but again weakened to Category 2 on August 19 due to increasing vertical wind shear.

Erin's precursor brought intense flooding to various islands in Cape Verde, resulting in nine fatalities on São Vicente. Over 178 mm (7 in) of rain fell within five hours between 01:00 and 06:00 UTC on August 11. The government of Cape Verde issued a disaster declaration for São Vicente and Santo Antão the same day.

ISRO developing semi-cryogenic engine working on LOX Kerosene propellant

ISRO is developing a 2000 kN thrust semi-cryogenic engine working on an LOX Kerosene propellant combination for enhancing the payload capability of LVM3 and for future launch vehicles. Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) is the lead centre for the development of semi-cryogenic propulsion systems with the support of other launch vehicle centres of ISRO. The assembly and testing of the propulsion modules were done at the ISRO propulsion complex (IPRC), Mahendragiri. As part of the engine development, a pre-burner ignition test article, which is a full complement of the engine power head system excluding the turbopumps is realized. The first ignition trial was conducted successfully on May 2, 2024, at semi cryo integrated engine test facility (SIET) at IPRC, Mahendragiri, which was dedicated to the nation recently by the honorable Prime Minister of India.
