Food Allergens

Relevance: Frito-Lay today issued a recall of a limited number of 13 oz. bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips that may contain undeclared milk, after being alerted through a consumer contact. Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the recalled product.

The product included in this recall was distributed to certain retail stores and e-commerce distributors in Oregon and Washington. Consumers would have been able to purchase these chips as early as November 3, 2024.

Reason for Recall:
Presence of Potential or Undeclared Allergen namely Milk

Unreported Allergens:

The consumption of meat and poultry products containing ingredients of public health concern, such as Undeclared Allergens, may result in adverse health outcomes for certain individuals. The most common undeclared allergens -- wheat, shellfish, eggs, fish, peanuts, milk, tree nuts, and soybeans -- account for 90 percent of all food allergic reactions and are the sources from which many other ingredients are derived. People may have adverse reactions to other substances as well. Consumption of some ingredients, such as sulfur-based preservatives (sulfites), lactose, FD&C Yellow 5 (Tartrazine), gluten, and monosodium glutamate (MSG), may result in an adverse reaction in certain susceptible individuals, yet they are not considered allergens.

FSSAI Food allergen declaration requirements: 
Information relating to food allergens as prescribed under sub-regulations 5 (14) of The FSSAI (Labelling and Display) Regulation, 2020.
Relevant Extracts from FSSAI (Labelling and Display) Regulation, 2020: 
(14) Declaration regarding Food allergen: The following foods and ingredients which are known to cause allergy shall be declared separately as Contains............................ (Name of allergy causing ingredients)
(i) Cereals containing gluten; i.e., wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt or their hybridized strains and products of these (To be declared as name of the cereal); 
2 [except 
       (a) wheat based glucose syrups including dextrose*; 
       (b) wheat based maltodextrins*; 
       (c) glucose syrups based on barley; 
       (d) cereals used for making alcoholic distillates including ethyl alcohol of agricultural origin; 
Note: * The products thereof, provided these ingredients have been assessed as safe and gluten shall not be more than 20 mg/kg.]
(ii) Crustacean and their products (To be declared as Crustacean); 
(iii) Milk & Milk products (To be declared as Milk); 
(iv) Eggs and egg products (To be declared as Egg); 
(v) Fish and fish products (To be declared as Fish); 
(vi) Peanuts, tree nuts (e.g. almonds, walnuts, pistachio, cashew nuts) and their products (To be declared as Nut); (vii) Soybeans and their products (To be declared as Soy); 
(viii) Sulphite in concentrations of 10mg/kg or more (To be declared as sulphite) Provided that in case presence of ingredients due to cross contamination which are known to cause allergy may be declared separately as May Contains.......................... (Name of allergy causing ingredients). 
 2[Provided further that this declaration is not required in case of oils and distilled alcoholic beverages derived from these ingredients and where the product itself is a food allergen.] Raw agricultural commodities are exempted from the allergen labelling requirements.

ISRO developing semi-cryogenic engine working on LOX Kerosene propellant

ISRO is developing a 2000 kN thrust semi-cryogenic engine working on an LOX Kerosene propellant combination for enhancing the payload capability of LVM3 and for future launch vehicles. Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) is the lead centre for the development of semi-cryogenic propulsion systems with the support of other launch vehicle centres of ISRO. The assembly and testing of the propulsion modules were done at the ISRO propulsion complex (IPRC), Mahendragiri. As part of the engine development, a pre-burner ignition test article, which is a full complement of the engine power head system excluding the turbopumps is realized. The first ignition trial was conducted successfully on May 2, 2024, at semi cryo integrated engine test facility (SIET) at IPRC, Mahendragiri, which was dedicated to the nation recently by the honorable Prime Minister of India.
